Burn amount and monthly burn
Burn amount is starting cash minus ending cash. Dividing by the number of months gives the average monthly burn when cash declined.
When cash increases
If ending cash is higher than starting cash, the business had a cash increase for the period. The calculator does not label that increase as positive burn.
Worked example
$100,000 declining to $70,000 over 3 months is a $30,000 burn and $10,000 monthly burn. Ending cash divided by that burn suggests 7 months of runway.
