Compare ad-attributed revenue with advertising cost

Return on ad spend, or ROAS, divides revenue from ads by advertising cost. It reports the revenue multiple and percentage return relative to ad spend, but it is not net profit because other costs are excluded.

ROAS, ROI, and profit

ROAS isolates ad-attributed revenue and advertising cost. ROI can include broader gains and costs, while profit subtracts all relevant business costs represented by the chosen profit definition.

Read the multiple carefully

A 5x ROAS means $5 of ad-attributed revenue for each $1 of ad spend. It does not mean $5 of profit or a 500% net margin.

Worked example

$5,000 in ad-attributed revenue divided by $1,000 ad spend equals 5x, or 500% ROAS. Revenue after ad spend is $4,000 before other costs.

Frequently asked questions

Practical questions people ask about this tool

What if advertising cost is zero?

ROAS is not calculable because the formula divides by advertising cost.

Is ROAS the same as ROI?

No. ROAS focuses on ad-attributed revenue versus ad cost; ROI is a broader return measure.

Does ROAS equal profit?

No. Other costs are excluded, so the revenue remaining after ad spend is not net profit.
