Revenue Growth Calculator

Compare periods of equal length and accounting basis for a useful growth signal.

Revenue growth guidance

See both the dollar change and the percentage change

Growth analysis is clearer when you show the absolute revenue change alongside the percentage. This calculator also calls out the special case where the previous period is zero.

Absolute change

Current revenue minus previous revenue, shown in currency.

Growth rate

The change divided by previous revenue, expressed as a percentage.

Declines are visible

A lower current value produces a negative change and decrease status.

Zero-base limitation

A conventional percentage cannot be calculated when the previous period is zero.

How to use this calculator

Compare equal periods on the same basis

  1. 1

    Enter the previous period

    Use the earlier period's revenue.

  2. 2

    Enter the current period

Use the later period's revenue on the same basis.

  3. 3

    Review direction and rate

Read the dollar change, percentage growth, and increase or decrease status together.

Absolute growth versus percentage growth

Absolute growth tells you how many currency units changed. Percentage growth puts that change in relation to the previous period, which helps compare periods of different size.

Positive and negative growth

If current revenue is higher, the calculator shows an increase and positive change. If it is lower, it shows a decrease and negative growth rate.

Why the zero base needs context

When previous revenue is zero and current revenue is positive, the conventional percentage formula has a zero denominator. The absolute change remains meaningful, but the percentage should be described as not calculable from that base.

Example: 25% growth

Previous revenue: $100,000 Current revenue: $125,000 Revenue change: +$25,000 Growth rate: +25% Status: Increase

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing periods of unequal length.
  • Mixing gross and net revenue definitions.
  • Using percentage growth without showing the dollar change.
  • Showing Infinity when the previous period is zero.

Frequently asked questions
